Hey y'all.... so yesterday the 4th of April there was a bus accident in which it is reported about 6 people died.
Tragic. Especially for the families of the deceased. But... all over social media I only kept seeing condolences to one family. The one whose daughter was a bride to be. Of course absolutely nothing wrong with issuing out condolences. Only problem is this tendency to only feel remorse for and talk about the "celebrity".
I'll explain.
If there are 2 or 3 people in a vehicle and of those people one of them happens to be a famous person and then an accident occurs, the only person or person's family that will receive tons of love, remorse and have posts of condolences sent their way is that of the famous person. And this really bothers me because do the lives of the other victims not matter and go unnoticed because they were unknowns? No. Every life matters and cannot be measured or valued by one's level of popularity or wealth.
So back to yesterday's accident. I got on Facebook and all I saw were posts about a bride whose wedding was going to take place this coming Saturday and everyone seems to be sad about it and saying how tragic it was that this one particular person had to die.... Pause.... Yes, she was a beautiful young woman whose bride price had been paid, had her kitchen party (bridal shower) past saturday, one whose family was excited and looking forward to her getting married which in Africa happens to be a girl's highest end achievement besides having children (topic for another day). Venues booked and paid for. Her wedding dress acquired in wait for the big day. Poor groom eager to marry and in love and all of a sudden she was gone. Just like that. Without a doubt very sad.
BUT.... what about the others? Do they not deserve our compassion because they weren't about to have their wedding this weekend? Are their lives not significant enough to earn sympathy and posts of condolence? Is one person's death worse than another's? Were the rest more deserving of the tragedy than she was? I refuse to believe so but sadly at the end of the day it's just my opinion and I am but one person.
C'est la vie...
My condolences go out to every family that is mourning the death of someone involved in the accident.

I'm only just reading your blog for the very first time. This is the first post I've seen and it seems pretty sincere. I'm about to binge read everything else. Don't freak out if you get an anonymous comment on each post. Haha.
ReplyDeleteLol I'm excited just knowing it's being read so...happy binge reading :)
DeleteYou've touched acritical point. Everyone automatically sympathises with the late soon-to-be bride. The loss of life is tragic full stop. not cause you're about to marry or something else. Thanks for the great point!
ReplyDeleteYou know... it's a shame.
DeleteI love your perspective...
ReplyDeleteThankyou... and for reading this too
