"Ah I can't pay all that just to go watch a Zambian artist".... "Ah made in Zambia? Teti inshite"... "Zambians are useless"... "Rapping/singing in bemba? Aweh"... "When I have money I'll leave this place"
*sigh*
It's so easy for us to spend money on foreign artists or goods and not on our own. We have a very sad and serious inferiority complex. From childhood we have the mentality that Zambia is related to mediocrity. It is so severe that even when someone has outstanding talent, we shun them because it is hard to believe good can come from within us. But why?? We find it so hard to promote and encourage each other. It's almost an instinct we have embedded deep within us to put down any one trying to do great things.
We tend to adapt foreign terms, dress, gestures and phrases... We'd rather wear another country's traditional dress than our own, learn and speak another country's language proudly and not our own. We are quick to turn down opportunities to showcase our identity and instead take up foreign traits because local isn't "cool"
Look at how Americans stop everything they're doing once the national anthem comes on. How extremely patriotic they are. How the Nigerian, South African and East African countries support their music industry... Internationally recognized. They have a distinct sound. Zambia?? Lol. Imitation galore!
Why my people do we spite each other? Why do we not support and encourage each other?
This is our land... We are born of this soil. We are all but one. Yet we look for reasons to create divisions amongst ourselves
And even though recently a few of us have started to show interest in our own, I can't help but think it is merely a fad likely to phase out eventually
I will never be able to understand how a people can take so much pride in uplifting others by putting down their own and be okay with it.
