It is common knowledge that as a race, we as black people haven't had it easy. But decades after gaining our freedom.... Are we really free?? Have the chains really been broken? Everytime I ask myself these questions, a yes is really hard to let out.
We are still being held captive mentally by a ball and chain placed by our oppressors hundreds of years ago. Why are we so okay with being at the bottom? Why do we take it a step further and step on each other while at the bottom in order to feel more superior than each other?
We want to use petty wars such as light skin vs dark skin do decide which shade of black is the better one... And surprise surprise, the winner is the one closest to the color of the white man's skin. Smh and we wonder why women go to extremes trying to bleach their skin, straighten their hair and buy long silky straight hair trying achieve the "right" look then bash them for it later. Why do we constantly keep bringing each other down? Why should it matter how light or dark my shade of brown is?
We were told our skin is a deformity and a curse, that our hair isn't the way hair ought to be or look, that we aren't smart enough, and only white people are capable of coming up with useful inventions, that we are nothing, and our sole purpose is to labor for the white man.
What breaks my heart is that several decades later, we still believe it!! Aaarrgghh! It really is upsetting.
Free yourself!! Break those chains, do not cling to the shackles those before us fought so hard to get rid of... Rid yourself of the ignorance that gives strength and power to the oppressor!
